For centuries, the North Sea was not a boundary but a busy highway. Long before modern borders, ships crossed these waters carrying traders, travelers, pilgrims, settlers, and storytellers between the coasts of Ireland, Scotland, England, the Isle of Man, Scandinavia, and the northern isles of Orkney and Shetland. Along with goods and people, music traveled too—shared in ports, carried home by sailors, and reshaped by each new place it landed.
Our program draws from that long musical conversation around the North Sea. Some of the tunes are very old, passed down through generations. Others are newly written, inspired by the same traditions. You may hear echoes of many lands in a single set, reflecting how closely these musical cultures are connected.
As we explored this music, four themes kept appearing again and again: love, conflict, voyage, and home. Songs of devotion and longing, tunes shaped by times of struggle, melodies carried across seas and generations—and always the pull of home.
Our concert moves freely among these traditions and stories, much like the travelers who once crossed these waters. We hope you’ll hear the shared roots, the surprising connections, and the enduring spirit of the music that links these northern shores.
