Carl Dimow and David Newsam are eclectic and creative musicians who have been
performing together for over ten years, primarily with the Carl Dimow Jazz Quartet and
their Brazilian band, Choro Louco. This is a rare opportunity to hear them in a duo
setting. With Dimow on flute, bass flute and guitar, and Newsam on 7-string guitars and
mandolin they’ll perform repertoire that draws from both classic jazz standards and the
beautiful melodies of Brazilian folk, bossa and choro. Their performances have been
hailed as “mesmerizing,” “brilliant,” and “sublime.”
In addition to jazz and choro, Carl Dimow is known for his performances with the Casco
Bay Tummlers klezmer band - and for a wide variety of creative, improvised projects.
As a composer, Carl has created original music for his ensembles, plus music for
theater and film. His Klezmer Suite for Flute and Classical Guitar won the National Flute
Association New Music Competition in 2014 and has been performed on five continents.
Carl began his deep exploration of music during the 1970’s in his off grid cabin in central
Maine - where he still retreats for study and inspiration. He taught guitar at Colby
College for 36 years and still teaches privately at his home in South Portland.

David Newsam is a remarkably versatile guitarist whose playing is equally inspired by
jazz guitar greats Wes Montgomery and Jim Hall - and Latin American virtuosos such as
Laurindo Almeida and Luis Bonfa. David has performed with many noted musicians,
including Jim Hall, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Peter Bernstein; and jazz legends Clark Terry,
Phil Wilson, Joe Williams and Milt Jackson. David is an assistant professor at Berkeley
College, where he has taught jazz and classical guitar since 1989. He also created the
guitar program at the University of New Hampshire and taught there for over thirty
years.
